:: SPECIAL CAPABILITIES

R.M. Thornton is a special partner with unique capabilities. Here are a few project examples.

Washington National Cathedral: At the Washington National Cathedral, R.M. Thornton became one of the few contractors in the world ever to install air conditioning in a giant Gothic Cathedral. This Design/Build project was unique because the R.M. Thornton foreman and crew determined the routing of the entire piping system.

National Institutes of Health Building #14: R.M. Thornton installed chilled water lines for critical laboratories at National Institutes of Health, Building #14. The job consisted of hundreds of feet of chilled water mains, steam and steam condensate that had to be installed on the building’s roof, with a minimum of disruption in service.

National Institutes of Health Building #34: R.M. Thornton installed a 3,000 ton refrigeration water chiller in this existing building and performed all the general construction work with in-house staff, including the concrete cooling tower, all piping and all electrical work.

Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts: R.M. Thornton installed a complete new Central Heating System, complete with boiler.

Children’s National Medical Center (Washington, D.C.): R.M. Thornton removed, installed and/or rebuilt in place more than 20 Air Handling Units of approximately 20,000 cfm. This job was in demanding interstitial spaces limited ceiling heights to 4-6 feet, requiring special construction techniques by R.M. Thornton’s experienced team.

:: Green Building Is Here… and, It’s Hot!

R.M. Thornton is a proud member of the US Green Building Council. What used to be the future is now the present. Building “green” is a trend that is hot! Buildings consume 36% of total energy use, 65% of U.S. electrical consumption, 30% of our raw materials, 12% of our potable water and create 30% of our waste output. Green building construction can reduce these environmental impacts. And, R.M. Thornton is ready to be Washington’s “green contractor” of choice.

R.M. Thornton is dedicated to helping building owners and employers enhance the environmental quality of their buildings, and thereby help affect the economic realities of today.

Using green building techniques, R.M. Thornton can save on facility management cost, capital expenditures, and operation and maintenance; making the asset valuation higher, resulting in a building that’s worth more. The bottom line for building owners is green buildings have a higher resale value.
